Guide to Using the Functional Zone & Pacing Scale App

This app is a free tool which helps you understand your current safe operating zone — how much your body can realistically tolerate right now — based on pacing, crashes (flare ups), functional cost, and sleep quality over the last week.

Answer honestly based on how things have actually been, not how you wish they were.

Step 1: Enter Basic Details

  • Client Name
    Enter your name (or your client’s name if you’re completing this together).

  • Date
    This is filled in automatically. You only need to change it if you’re logging a past assessment.

Step 2: Part 1 — Energy Envelope Adherence (Pacing Integrity)

You’ll see five short questions about how well you stayed within your limits over the last 7 days (or a typical recent week).

  • For each question, choose a number from:

    • 1 = Never

    • 5 = Always

  • Answer based on real behaviour, not intention.

Important note about Question 1

One question is reverse-scored.
This means:

  • Answering “Always” reflects good pacing

  • Answering “Never” reflects poor pacing

You don’t need to calculate anything — the app adjusts this automatically.

Step 3: Part 2 — Crash Hierarchy (Deepest Crash)

Choose the single level that best represents the deepest crash you experienced in the last 7 days.

  • Levels range from 0 to 3

  • Higher levels reflect deeper or more disabling crashes

The app will automatically apply the correct weighting.

Step 4: Part 3 — Functional Cost

Here you’ll select the option that best describes:

The recovery cost of your biggest activity in the last week

Think in terms of:

  • How long it took to recover

  • How much it disrupted your functioning afterward

Again, choose the option that feels most accurate overall.

Step 5: Part 4 — Sleep Quality (Morning State)

Select the option that best describes how you typically felt on waking over the last 7 days.

This isn’t about perfect sleep — it’s about your baseline morning state.

Step 6: Review Your Results (Live Feedback)

As you complete the form, your results update automatically.

You’ll see:

  • Total FZPS Score
    Updated in real time

  • Score Gauge
    Shows where you sit across the different functional zones

  • Functional Zone Classification
    For example:

    • Pacing Success

    • Caution Needed

    • Post-Exertional Malaise warning

    • SYSTEM COLLAPSE warning

  • Clinical Alerts & Triggers
    These appear when certain patterns suggest increased risk

  • Recommended Clinical Management
    General guidance tailored to your current zone

This feedback is designed to inform decisions, not judge performance.

Step 7: Download Your PDF Report

Once all questions are completed:

  • The Download PDF Report button becomes active

    • Top right on desktop

    • Bottom of the form on mobile

  • Click to generate a professional PDF summary including:

    • Your answers

    • Scores and classification

    • Alerts and recommendations

  • The report also includes a link to the Neurological Physio website for further support.
